Why Fred hasn’t completed Nav & Radar Part B yet

By: Fred, but mainly Emma :-)

Currently I am waiting for the MCA to update the syllabus, which should happen every 5 years. The last update was due in 2022, but we’re still waiting for the changes.

Typically it takes me around 6-12 months to develop a course, so I want to ensure it’s as up-to-date and as close to the syllabus as possible.

While part A of the course won’t change, Part B requires significant updates, such as removing outdated systems like Loran C and parts of Differential GPS.

I inquired about the syllabus update in June 2024, and this was the response I received:

Q - When do you expect the OOW yacht written examination syllabus to be updated to reflect these changes?

A - “Yacht syllabus is revied by the IAMI Yacht Restricted Sub Group. Based on the learnings from the CTM syllabus review, changes will be made to the OOW and Master yacht syllabuses. The process will be initiated this year”.

The day they confirm the new syllabus is when I will continue the course.

Don’t shoot the messenger!

Happy studying!

- Fred
