The Slater Fund - What is it?

In short, fantastic!

The Slater Fund is a scholarship program managed by the Marine Society on behalf of Nautilus.

It represents a unique opportunity for UK seafarers to advance their careers without the usual financial stress.

Its primary goal?

To provide substantial financial assistance for UK seafarers pursuing their first certificate of competency (COC) while attracting and fostering growth within the marine industry.

Key Benefits:

• Up to £18,500 in financial support

• Coverage for course fees, accommodation, travel, learning resources and living expenses.

• A completion bonus of up to £1500

Who is eligible?

• UK seafarer resident in the UK

• 21 years or older (no upper age limit)

• Hold a valid ENG1 medical certificate

• Intend to work at sea for the foreseeable future

• Have completed all required seagoing service for your target certificate

• Hold all documents in 4a of MSF 4343

What certificates does the fund cover?

Initially established to support the candidate's first certificate of competency, Slater scholarships have now been broadened to other experienced seafarers, including electro-technical officers (ETOs), holders of Class 2 or 1 Fishing, yacht, workboat, tug and other crew looking to gain Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Certification.

• Officer of the Watch (OOW) Unlimited

• Engineer Officer of the Watch III/1

• Electro-Technical Officer

• Master <200gt / OOW 500gt

• OOW Tugs <500gt

• OOW Yachts <3000gt

• Chief Mate Yachts <3000gt

• Master Yachts <500gt

• Master Workboats <500gt

• Small Vessels Engineer III/2

• Class 1 Fishing with OOW unlimited conversion

⚠️ Note: the fund does not support those aiming for Chief Mate unlimited, Master of Yachts <3000gt or any Master certificate if you already hold the OOW unlimited.

How much financial support did you say?

The Slater scholarship offers up to £18,500 with a completion bonus of up to £1500.

And this is not just for the cost of your courses – they can also assist with accommodation, travel, learning resources and living expenses while you study.

So, if you are accepted, I want you to be forever grateful and spread the word about what this fantastic charity is doing for the marine industry.

Funds are available for two years from the award date, and you are expected to achieve your COC within this time.

There are two intakes per year.

You cannot apply for funding for courses already started or completed, so submit your application ASAP.
