From Master 3000gt to Yacht Unlimited - The MCA’s New Pathway
By: Fred (but mainly Emma)
Well…the MCA have finally done it!
After years of rumours, Monaco Boat Show presentations, and endless “coming soon” conversations, the new Yacht Unlimited Certificates of Competency are now officially written into MSN 1858 Amendment 2.
And for a lot of yacht crew, this is probably the biggest change to yacht certification in years.
Why this matters
For years, the progression route for yacht officers basically stopped at Master 3000gt Yacht.
But owners wanted bigger boats, and when LY3 removed the old 3000gt operational ceiling around 2013–2014, the superyacht industry changed rapidly.
Shipyards could suddenly build much larger yachts under yacht-specific codes, without having to fully design and operate them like traditional passenger ships or cruise ships.
The yachts evolved quickly….
The certification structure did not….
So while owners could build 4000gt, 5000gt and even larger yachts, the officers onboard still found their yacht qualification pathway effectively stopping at Master 3000gt.
That created a bizarre situation where the yachts kept getting bigger… but the qualifications did not.
To continue progressing, many crew were forced into the commercial unlimited route — often requiring them to return to college and effectively restart the OOW Unlimited pathway from scratch, despite already having years of yacht experience.
It just didn’t make sense.
So what exactly is the new route?
The MCA describes the new pathway as:
“a clear progression pathway for seafarers operating in the large yacht sector”
The idea is fairly simple:
You can now progress to unlimited certification while remaining within the yacht sector.
But this is not a quick conversion.
The MCA have still aligned this route with management-level STCW standards, meaning there are significant academic modules, ancillary courses, assessments and oral exams involved.
Chief Mate Yacht Unlimited - Requirements
The new Chief Mate Yacht Unlimited route can be entered via holding either:
Master <3000gt Yacht, OR
OOW Unlimited with qualifying yacht service.
(Commercial crew moving into yachting)
1. Hold the applicable ancillary certificates (from section 6) listed below:
(Note: NAEST - Navigational aids and equipment simulator training - not new to unlimited, but new to yachts)
2. Complete the following academic modules at an MCA approved nautical college:
(At the time of writing, we are not yet sure how long it will take before schools begin offering these newly approved MCA modules/courses)
Applied Marine Meteorology
Management Level Passage Planning
Management of Bridge Operations
Management of Yacht Operations
Marine Engineering Systems
Marine Vessels - Structures and Maintenance
Ship Stability - Theory and Practical Application
Shipboard Management
Shipmaster’s Law & Business
3. Successfully pass MCA Assessments in Chief Mate Navigation and stability
(Written exam for the modules above)
4. Hold a valid ENG1
Do I need to do an oral?
In the fine print footnote “10” says:
“Holders of a Master (Yachts) CoC less than 3000gt, 11/2, or a Chief Mate Unlimited CoC (merchant or yachts) are exempted from the Chief Mate Yacht Unlimited oral examination for this CoC. They must, however, pass the Master Unlimited GT Yacht oral examination for this CoC.”
So at first reading, it appears the answer is NO - however, we are currently clarifying this with the MCA, as it looks like they have missed the footnote.
Master Yacht Unlimited - Requirements
The Master Yacht Unlimited pathway can be achieved through several routes depending on your current certification and sea service.
1. Hold or meet the requirements for Chief Mate Yachts Unlimited COC.
⚠️ Note: A lot of crew seem confused by this part. Some are reading it as though you can go straight from M3000 to Master Yacht Unlimited - you can’t without doing all the Chief Mate Yacht Unlimited modules and requirements first.
2. Complete one of the following routes:
Route 1
While holding a Chief Mate Yacht Unlimited and completing:
A minimum of 12 months’ onboard yacht service as Chief Mate
At least 6 months of seagoing service
All service must be onboard a yacht of at least ≥500gt
Route 2
While holding Master <3000gt Yacht and completing:
A minimum of 6 months’ onboard yacht service as Master
At least 3 months of seagoing service
All service must be onboard a yacht of at least ≥500gt
Route 3
While holding OOW Unlimited and completing:
A minimum of 36 months’ onboard yacht service as OOW
At least 15 months of seagoing service
All service must be onboard a yacht of at least ≥500gt
So in simple terms — the route changes depending on the position you currently hold onboard.
If you are working as Chief Mate Yacht Unlimited, you need 12 months onboard service.
If you hold M3000 Yacht and are working as Captain on a ≥500gt yacht, you need less time — only 6 months onboard service.
While crew coming from the commercial unlimited route need significantly longer yacht service before qualifying.
Hope that makes more sense! If not, email me at fred@fredsoralprep.com)
3. Hold the applicable ancillary certificates (from section 6) listed below:
(Note: NAEST - Navigational aids and equipment simulator training - not new to unlimited, but new to yachts)
4. Hold a valid ENG1
5. Pass the Master Unlimited oral exam.
Final though
It’s exciting as this was overdue.
A lot of crew thought their studying days ended at M3000.
Dust off the notes…
Because Yacht Unlimited is officially here.
Cheers
