Exam Technique - Why it’s so important!
By: Fred, but mainly Emma :-)
You know the content inside and out; now let's master the exam technique.
Imagine this: you’ve spent months preparing for your big day, confident in your understanding of the content. Yet, during the exam, you find yourself stumped by the questions the examiner is asking. “Why is he asking that?” “What is he looking for?” This scenario is all too familiar for many students and underscores a critical point – mastering exam techniques is just as crucial as knowing the content (and another step in my system).
The Driving Test Analogy (yes, it’s about cars)
Consider this analogy: You may know how to drive a car, but that doesn’t mean you’ll pass your driving test. Passing requires understanding the test format and examiner expectations, such as “mirror, signal, manoeuvre.” The same principle applies to your MCA exam.
Familiarise yourself with the terminology and vocabulary used
Ever heard of command words? They are rods and phrases used in exams that tell students how they should answer the questions - ⚠️ so kind of important
The Examiner’s Perspective
Examiners follow a syllabus and listen for specific keywords. For instance, they might ask an open question like, “Tell me about an SMS?” and expect six keywords in response. (SOCREM) Thanks to my decade of experience focused solely on oral prep courses and monitoring examiners, I’ve identified these keywords for you.
“He is looking for specific words in your answer and does not move on until he hears that specific word from you. ”
How understanding Exam Technique dramatically improves your chances
Example: A student who knows the content but lacks exam technique might give a long-winded answer without hitting the key points. In contrast, a student with good exam technique will provide a concise answer using the expected key words – acing the exam.
My System
I don’t just test your knowledge; I ensure you explain it using the key words examiners want to hear. My system combines content mastery with exam technique, preparing you to respond effectively before the examiner says, “That’s good, candidate. Let’s move on.”
